Terminal Fundamentals

Before you can do anything else in this course, you need to be comfortable
just moving around — finding out where you are, getting somewhere else,
and creating, copying, moving, and deleting files and folders along the
way.

Why This Matters

Every other module in this course assumes you can navigate a filesystem
without thinking about it. Permissions, redirection, environment
variables, SSH — all of it is built on top of the handful of commands
you’ll learn here.

What You’ll Learn

• What Terminal and a shell actually are
• How the filesystem is structured, and the difference between an
  absolute and a relative path
• How to create, move, copy, and delete files and folders with mkdir,
  touch, mv, cp, rm, and rmdir
• How to list directory contents with ls and its most useful flags

Outcome

By the end of this module, you’ll be able to get around the filesystem
confidently from the command line and manage files without reaching for a
GUI.
